LGBTQ Rights The rights of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders, and queers are often under attack from religious organizations as well as government policy. In the United States the constitution was meant to separate church and state, but in many instances the coexistence between the two greatly affects LGBTQ rights. The discrimination against the LGBTQ community causes many of their rights to be denied. America has come a long way in rights for their citizens, but it seems that we have come to an abrupt halt in basic human rights. Slavery and segregation of African American’s and other blacks were demolished within the last century of American history, but it seems many people are still undergoing segregation in everyday life. The LGBTQ community is still being discriminated against to this day. The push for civil marriage rights for non-traditional couples began in the 70’s, and as of 2012 forty-one states still banned same-sex marriage. Today the number of states banning same sex marriage has gone down to twenty-five states. The most publicised discrimination against the LGBTQ community is same-sex marriage rights. In fact, still today many states do not allow same-sex marriage. However there are a handful of states that recognize practices such as civil unions, the fact that these states will not allow same sex couples to use the word marriage is adding to the discrimination.
